CNMCH originated from the National Medical Institute, founded in 1921 during the Non-cooperation movement, and was later nationalized in 1948 and brought under the West Bengal Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in 1967. The institution is accredited by the National Medical Commission and was affiliated with the University of Calcutta until 2003, after which it became affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS). Among its undergraduate programs, CNMC offers a Nursing course with an annual intake of 50 students, alongside MBBS (250 seats) and various postgraduate degree and diploma programs. CNMCH itself is one of the largest government hospitals in West Bengal, with more than 8,000 outpatients daily and a total bed strength of 1,470. It has been recognized for excellence in maternity care, receiving the LaQshya Certificate from the Union health ministry, becoming the first medical institute in West Bengal to achieve this distinction.
