ROYAL COLLEGE OF NURSING
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is a registered trade union and professional body in the United Kingdom for those in the nursing profession. It was founded on 27 March 1916 as the College of Nursing Ltd, with 34 members, through the efforts of Dame Sarah Swift, Arthur Stanley, Rachael Cox-Davies, and Alicia Lloyd-Still. It operates a main library in London plus regional libraries, and the RCN Institute provides courses for nurses. Since 1977, the RCN has been registered as a trade union. In the 21st century, it transferred its charitable activities to the independent RCN Foundation in 2010, and in 2019 it held its first-ever strike, limited to Northern Ireland, over staffing and pay issues.
