DR AMBEDKAR GOVERNMENT LAW COLLEGE PUDUPAKKAM

Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, commonly known by its former name Madras Law College, traces its origins to informal law classes conducted by George Norton in the early 19th century. John Bruce Norton became the first professor of law in 1855, and the college was later established as an independent institution in 1891, with Reginald A. Nelson as its first Principal. The college moved into a building designed by Henry Irwin in 1899, located near the Madras High Court, where it remained for over a century. In 1990, it was renamed Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College to commemorate B. R. Ambedkar's birth centenary. In 1997, it was transferred to the newly established Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. The college offers a 5-year integrated B.A., B.L. program and a 3-year B.G.L. program, with admissions handled by the university, enrolling 562 students annually. Due to structural damage discovered around 2015, linked to Metro Rail construction, the college split into two campuses in 2018. The Pudupakkam Village campus in Kancheepuram district now accommodates 1,205 students studying the five-year law courses, while the Pattaraiperumbudur Village campus in Thiruvallur District houses students studying the three-year law courses.
