National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences, Bangalore

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore Act, 2012 is an act of the Parliament of India that granted the status of Institute of National Importance to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore (NIMHANS). This made NIMHANS the fourth medical institute in the country to receive this status, following the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, and the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research. The Act establishes NIMHANS as a more autonomous institution and as a corporate body, placing it outside the purview of the Medical Council of India (MCI). The law specifies the objects and functions of the institute, the composition of its members, and their powers and functions. It also states that NIMHANS will carry out its functions under the control of the central government. The new status was intended to facilitate the inflow of more funds in order to increase faculty numbers, expand infrastructure, and enable NIMHANS to play a greater role in the field of mental health and neuroscience education and research.
