NATIONAL HEART INSTITUTE
Institut Jantung Negara Sdn Bhd, also known as the National Heart Institute (abbreviated IJN), is a heart surgery centre situated on Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, next to Kuala Lumpur Hospital. It was first established in 1984 by a group of cardiologists and general physicians, initially operating out of the old blood bank office of Kuala Lumpur Hospital (GHKL); the institute's logo was also created that same year. In 1992, IJN relocated to its current site. The institute specializes in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery services for both adult and paediatric patients, and functions as the national referral centre for cardiovascular disease, receiving cases from across Malaysia and abroad, as well as handling follow-up cases through its outpatient clinics. IJN underwent an expansion that was completed in late 2009, after which the number of beds dedicated to heart treatment increased to 432, making it one of the largest heart centres in the region. In March 2019, pioneer surgeon Yahya Awang announced that IJN would be taken over by the Ministry of Health from the Ministry of Finance.
