The Haffkine Institute for Training, Research and Testing is located in Parel, Mumbai, India. It was established on 10 August 1899 by Dr. Waldemar Mordechai Haffkine as the 'Plague Research Laboratory,' a bacteriology research centre. The institute now provides basic and applied bio-medical science services and opened a museum in March 2014 showcasing Haffkine's research and the institute's history. It received ISO 9001:2008 certification in 2012. The institute is affiliated with the University of Mumbai for M.Sc (Microbiology, Applied Biology, and Organic Chemistry), Ph.D. (Microbiology), and M.D. (P.S.M.) degree programs. It also conducts specialized testing for pharmaceutical and health-related products, and performs research on foot-and-mouth disease vaccines, typhoid surveillance, drug resistance in bacteria, AIDS-related infections, and new chemotherapeutic agents. Historically, Haffkine developed vaccines against cholera and bubonic plague, testing the plague vaccine on himself in 1897. The institute originally operated from 'Sans Pareil,' a former Jesuit chapel and governor's residence on Parel Island, formally opened by Lord Sandhurst in 1899. It was renamed the 'Bombay Bacteriology Laboratory' in 1906 and finally the 'Haffkine Institute' in 1925.
