Hooghly Womens College

Hooghly Women's College is a women's arts and sciences college situated in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, India. It offers undergraduate courses in arts, commerce and sciences and is affiliated to the University of Burdwan, having earlier been affiliated to Calcutta University until 1962. It is the sixth academic institution in the district and the first women's college established there, also being the largest women's college under Burdwan University. An initial attempt to start the college began in 1943 in a building called 'Mission House' in Chinsurah Maidan, but recognition delays halted it. Chief Minister Bidhan Chandra Roy inaugurated new buildings in February 1952. Sri Kalipada Mitra was the first principal, followed by several others up to the present. The college offers science departments including Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Microbiology, and arts departments including Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Geography, Political Science, Philosophy, and Economics. It has been awarded a B++ grade by NAAC and is recognized by the UGC.
