Nalanda Open University (NOU) is a university based in Patna, Bihar, India, established in March 1987 by an ordinance of the Government of Bihar, later formalized through the Nalanda Open University Act of 1995. It is named after the ancient Buddhist Nalanda University. NOU is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities. It is the only university in Bihar dedicated exclusively to distance education and is the second largest open university in India after IGNOU. The university offers certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs across diverse fields including languages (notably Magahi, Bhojpuri, and Maithili), sciences, commerce, social sciences, journalism, and library science. It operates through ten schools, including the School of Indology and the School of Teacher's Education. Initially headquartered at Biscomaun Bhawan in Patna, NOU inaugurated a new campus in Baragaon, Silav, Nalanda district, in August 2023, built at a cost of Rs 121 crore. In 2020, it became the first university in Bihar to adopt the University Management Information System (UMIS), enabling online admissions, examinations, and result publication.
