Bhadrak Institute of Engineering & Technology (BIET), formerly Barapada School of Engineering and Technology (BSET), was founded in 1957 by Harekrushna Mahatab with the aim of developing a rural university. After closing in the 1960s, it reopened in 1982 under new leadership. Degree engineering courses began in 1997, MCA in 1998, MBA in 2002, and ITI courses in 2000. The institute is a life member of the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) and spans 10.33 acres at Barapada, about 8 km from Bhadrak and 140 km from Bhubaneswar. BIET offers B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, MCA, and Diploma programs, approved by AICTE, recognized by the Odisha government, and affiliated with Biju Pattnaik University of Technology (BPUT), Rourkela, with diploma courses affiliated to SCTE & VT. Departments include Civil, Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, Information Technology, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering, along with Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, MCA, and Business Administration. Facilities include four hostels, a library with 50,000 volumes, transport services, health care facilities including a PHC and ambulances, and banking services from United Bank of India and Punjab National Bank.
