STANFORD SCHOOL OF LAW

Stanford Law School (SLS) is the law school of Stanford University, established in 1893 when the university hired its first two law professors, Benjamin Harrison and Nathan Abbott. The school transitioned from a department to an officially named law school in 1908, received ABA accreditation in 1923, and required a bachelor's degree for admission starting in 1924. It moved locations several times, settling in the Crown Quadrangle in the 1970s. The school expanded its clinical, joint-degree, and diversity initiatives throughout the 20th century, hiring its first female professor in 1972 and its first professor of color the same year. Today, Stanford Law employs 98 full-time and 128 part-time faculty, enrolling about 570 J.D. students with an annual incoming class of approximately 190, the smallest among top 14 law schools. It offers a J.D. as well as LL.M., M.L.S., J.S.M., and J.S.D. degrees, maintains eleven full-time legal clinics, and provides 27 joint degree programs. George Triantis currently serves as dean, and the school is known for its low student-to-faculty ratio of 4.3 to 1.
