AIR FORCE TECHNICAL COLLEGE, BANGALORE
Air Force Technical College (AFTC), located in Bangalore, India, was established on 4 July 1949 in collaboration with Air Service Training Co. (Hamble), UK, initially named Technical Training College (TTC). Staffed first by Royal Air Force officers and technicians, it trained Indian youths aged 15 to 17.5 as aircraft apprentices in streams like airframes, aero engines, instruments, electricals, wireless, radar, and armaments. The training evolved over the years, eventually becoming a four-year program at AFTC. The college was renamed AFTC on 1 January 1957, with Gp. Capt M.J. Kriplani as its first Indian commandant. It became the alma mater for all IAF technical officers, integrating technical branches into Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical) and (Electronics) by 1971. The Apprentices' Training Scheme ended in 1962, and Direct Entry officer training was accelerated. The college's crest, approved in 1962, features a mechanical gear, electrical waves, and an eternal flame, with the motto 'Gyanen Shobhamahe'. It was awarded the Presidential Colors in 2008. Alumni have risen to ranks such as Air Marshal and Colonel, and an alumni association called 'Afticans' was formed in 2011 to commemorate the college's legacy.
