The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) is an autonomous, publicly funded university established by the Government of Kerala, devoted to studies in fisheries and ocean sciences. It was established on 20 November 2010 under the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies Act, 2010, passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly on 30 December 2010, and began functioning on 1 April 2011. Its headquarters are at the College of Fisheries, Panangad, near Madavana Junction along the Kochi Bypass in Ernakulam district, Kerala. The College of Fisheries, established in 1979, and the Fisheries Research Station, Puthuvype, were disaffiliated from Kerala Agricultural University to form KUFOS, making it the first fisheries university in India under the Fisheries Ministry. The university offers undergraduate (B.F.Sc.), postgraduate (M.F.Sc.), and doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes under the Faculty of Fisheries, following the ICAR pattern, along with courses in oceanography, management, and engineering through other faculties such as Ocean Science & Technology, Fisheries Management, and Fisheries Engineering. The Governor of Kerala serves as Chancellor, and the Minister for Fisheries as Pro-Chancellor. B. Madhusoodhana Kurup was the inaugural Vice-Chancellor. The total campus area is 69 acres.
