The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) is a central university located in Hyderabad, India, and is the only university in South Asia dedicated solely to languages. It was founded in 1958 as the Central Institute of English by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, and began functioning on 17 November 1958. In 1972, it was renamed the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) after adding German, Russian, and French. In 2006, it gained central university status through an Act of Parliament and became the English and Foreign Languages University. The main Hyderabad campus houses 7 schools with 26 departments, offering graduate, postgraduate, research, diploma, and distance/part-time courses. It also has regional campuses at Shillong (established 1973) and Lucknow (established 1979), each with their own libraries and hostels, offering various English, linguistics, and foreign language courses. The university publishes an official journal, Contextures: A Journal of Literature and Culture, focusing on literary and cultural debates. EFLU aims to conduct advanced research and training in English and foreign languages across teacher education, literature, linguistics, and cultural studies.
