KANYASHREE UNIVERSITY

Kanyashree University is a public women's university in Krishnagar, Nadia district, West Bengal, India, and the second such university in the state after Diamond Harbour Women's University. It takes its name from the Kanyashree scheme, a state programme for girl students. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the university in August 2018, and the Kanyashree University Act, 2018 received the Governor's assent on 2 January 2019, establishing it as a state-aided university with jurisdiction across West Bengal. The foundation stone for a permanent 12.5-acre campus adjacent to Krishnagar Government College was laid in January 2019, though construction remained stalled as of 2023. Postgraduate admissions began in 2020, with temporary academic and administrative campuses at Krishnagar Collegiate School and Krishnanagar Government College. The university offers two-year postgraduate programmes across eleven departments, including Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Geography, Social Work, Education, Law, Food and Nutrition, Mathematics, and Mass Communication and Journalism, alongside certificate courses. Governance includes a Governing Board, Schools of Studies, Boards of Studies, and a Finance Committee, with the Vice-Chancellor as chief executive officer. Professor Tapati Chakraborti has served as vice-chancellor since 2025, amid past administrative disputes involving reservation norms and staff removals.
