ALL INDIA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES MADURAI
All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Madurai (AIIMS Madurai) is one of the AIIMS group of autonomous public medical institutions established under the PMSSY division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It is located at Thoppur near Madurai, Tamil Nadu, though it currently operates from a temporary campus at GRMC, Ramnathapuram, Tamil Nadu. The institute was announced in the 2015–16 budget speech, and after considering several sites in Tamil Nadu, the Union Cabinet approved a 222-acre location at Thoppur in 2018. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2019, and the institute was officially established through a Government of India gazette notification on July 3, 2020. Construction has been supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with a loan agreement signed in February 2022. The medical college began operations with 50 students in April 2022, for the 2021–2022 academic session, and now has three student batches with a fourth expected soon. The planned hospital will have around 750 beds and 15–20 super specialty departments, admitting students annually through NEET(UG).
