Tamil Nadu University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (TANUVAS) is a veterinary university established in Madhavaram Milk Colony, Chennai, India. Its origins trace back to an institution founded in 1876, which became a college in 1903 with 20 students at Dobbin Hall, Chennai, offering a three-year diploma course called Graduate of Madras Veterinary College. The Government of Tamil Nadu formally established the university on 20 September 1989 through the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Act, 1989. It was formed from the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, which included the Madras Veterinary College, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, and Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, all of which became constituent colleges. The university now includes the Madras Veterinary College, Vepery; Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal; Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli; Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu, Thanjavur; and the Institute of Food and Dairy Technology, Koduvalli, Chennai. It also maintains research farms for leprosy bacteria, prawn and edible fish culture, and animal feed safety. In 2024, the NIRF ranked it 17th among Agriculture institutes in India.
