Bongaigaon College

Bongaigaon College was established on 8 July 1964 through a community initiative led by academics, social workers, and local leaders to expand access to higher education in the Bongaigaon region of Assam. The college began with pre-university arts courses affiliated with Gauhati University and gradually expanded to include commerce and full degree programmes. It received deficit grants-in-aid status from the Government of Assam and was recognised under sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the University Grants Commission Act. In 2019, the college was accredited with a 'B' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. Over time, it introduced a wider range of undergraduate courses and postgraduate programmes in English and Hindi, along with short-term professional courses in areas such as computer applications, taxation, and financial accounting. In the early 2020s, the Government of Assam proposed upgrading select colleges into full-fledged universities, and Bongaigaon College was chosen for this transformation. The Assam Legislative Assembly passed the Bongaigaon University Act, 2023, which received the Governor's assent on 22 November 2023, formally establishing Bongaigaon University on the college's original campus of about 64 bighas in Bongaigaon town.
