Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications & Geo Informatics

Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics (BISAG) is a Scientific Society under the Ministry of Electronics & IT, established to provide services and solutions in implementing map-based GeoSpatial Information Systems. It operates a SATCOM network, a satellite communication service enabling statewide distant interaction. BISAG works on geo-spatial technologies for planning and developmental activities related to agriculture, land and water resource management, wasteland and watershed development, forestry, disaster management, infrastructure, and education. The institute originated in June 1997 as the Remote Sensing and Communication Centre (RESECO), established under the Science and Technology Cell of the Education Department of the Gujarat Government. It was renamed Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo-Informatics in December 2003, after the 12th-century Indian mathematician Bhaskaracharya. Its SATCOM facility, comprising an uplink earth station, control room, TV studio, and networked classrooms, is used to air practical .net and java training sessions conducted by Microsoft and TCS. RESECO implemented India's first GIS-based computer system for the Forests & Environment Department of Gujarat, now used as a Coastal Zone Information System. BISAG scientists also produce GIS and Geoinformatics software, web applications, and research papers covering networking, big data mining, GIS, machine learning, image processing, and information security.
