VEER SURENDRA SAI INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES AND RESEARCH

Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), located in Burla, Sambalpur district, Odisha, was established in 1959 as Burla Medical College, the second medical college in the state. It began with 41 male and 9 female students drawn from SCB Medical College, Cuttack, under its first principal, Radhanath Mishra. After initial recognition issues with the Medical Council of India, a new campus was built, completed in 1966, with MCI approval granted in 1967. The college was renamed Veer Surendra Sai Medical College in 1969, honoring freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai, and became an autonomous institution on 1 January 2015, adopting its current name. VIMSAR offers MBBS, MD, MS, and paramedical diploma courses, with admissions through NEET-UG and NEET-PG, and is recognised by the National Medical Commission. It serves as a major tertiary-care teaching hospital, recently adding a six-storey super-specialty block inaugurated in May 2025, providing about 272 beds and nine specialist departments. Notable alumni include neurosurgeon B. K. Misra and politician Sambit Patra.
