Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Mohali

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is an Indian autonomous scientific society operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It was created in November 1987 as the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing Technology (C-DACT), renamed C-DAC in March 1988, after the US Government refused to sell India a Cray supercomputer over nuclear proliferation concerns. Dr Vijay Bhatkar was hired as its founding director, and the effort culminated in the PARAM 8000 supercomputer, released in 1991. In 2003, the National Centre for Software Technology, Electronic Research and Development Centre, and CEDTI were merged into C-DAC. C-DAC conducts research in high performance computing and other advanced computing fields, and provides education through PG diploma programmes and certification courses such as CCHPCP via its Advanced Computing Training School (ACTS), as well as Centres of Excellence in Information Technology abroad. It has developed numerous products including the PARAM supercomputer series, VEGA microprocessors, Bharat Operating System Solutions, GARUDA grid computing initiative, and eSanjeevani telemedicine platform. C-DAC has partnered with organizations like L&T Semiconductor Technologies for commercialization of its technologies and has received several awards, including recognition from ITU AI for Good and the Manthan Award.
