Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC),Kolkata

The Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) is a premier research and development unit of the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, with three campuses located in Kolkata. It conducts research in basic and applied nuclear sciences and develops advanced nuclear particle accelerators, and it has a collaboration with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The Centre houses a 224 cm cyclotron, the first of its kind in India, operational since 16 June 1977, which supplies proton, deuteron, alpha particle and heavy ion beams of various energies to other institutions. Major facilities at VECC include the K130 Cyclotron, K500 Superconducting Cyclotron, Cyclone-30 Medical Cyclotron, Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) Facility, a Computing Centre, and the Regional Radiation Medicine Centre. A new campus is being developed at New Town, Rajarhat, for the proposed ANURIB (Advanced National facility for Unstable & Rare-Isotope Beams) project, which is planned in collaboration with the Canada-based research institute TRIUMF and will conduct experiments involving unstable and rare isotope beams.
