BOMBAY NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY
The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) was founded on 15 September 1883 in Bombay, when eight men interested in natural history met at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Founders included Dr D. MacDonald, Dr G. A. Maconachie, Col. C. Swinhoe, Mr J. C. Anderson, Mr J. Johnston, Dr Atmaram Pandurang, and Dr Sakharam Arjun, with H. M. Phipson also part of the founding group. The society engages in conservation and biodiversity research, supporting research through grants and publishing the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society as well as a quarterly magazine, Hornbill. In 1911, R. C. Wroughton organised a major mammal survey using BNHS members across the Indian subcontinent, collecting 50,000 specimens over 12 years. Today, BNHS is headquartered at 'Hornbill House' in southern Mumbai, with a regional centre near Chilika Lake, Odisha. It is the partner of BirdLife International in India and has been designated a 'Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.' Its logo, the great hornbill, was inspired by a hornbill named William who lived at the Society from 1894 to 1920. BNHS also organises initiatives such as the National Dragonfly Festival and the Asian Waterbird Census.
