GOVT. LAW COLLEGE

Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram was established in 1875 by the Maharaja of Travancore as a law class attached to His Highness's College, later becoming an independent institution, His Highness Maharaja's Law College. It moved through various administrative controls, including the Dewan, Director of Public Instruction, High Court, University of Travancore, and finally the Government of Kerala after 1957. The college relocated briefly to Ernakulam in 1949 before returning to Thiruvananthapuram in 1954, settling in the Highland Bungalow at Barton Hill, a five-acre green campus. It offers undergraduate five-year integrated B.A. LL.B. and three-year LL.B. programs, both leading to eligibility to practice law in India, as well as LL.M. postgraduate degrees specializing in Constitutional Law and Criminal Law. Admissions are through the Kerala Law Entrance Examination. The college is affiliated with the Faculty of Law of the University of Kerala and regulated by the Bar Council of India. It houses one of the oldest and largest law libraries in India, with over 27,000 books and 5,000 periodicals. Notable alumni include Supreme Court Justice Fathima Beevi and academician N. R. Madhava Menon.
