INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TROPICAL METEOROLOGY,

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), based in Pune, Maharashtra, was founded on 17 November 1962 as the Institute of Tropical Meteorology, functioning initially as a unit of the India Meteorological Department. In 1971 it became autonomous and was renamed IITM. It operated under the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation until 1984, then under the Department of Science and Technology from 1985, before coming under the Ministry of Earth Sciences in 2006. IITM focuses on research in tropical meteorology and climate science, acting as a national center for monsoon meteorology research. It offers M.Sc., M.Tech., and Ph.D. programs jointly with the Department of Atmospheric and Space Sciences, University of Pune, and hosts internship opportunities for students. The institute runs several research projects, including the Monsoon Mission, Centre for Climate Change Research, and studies on tropical clouds and air quality. IITM also houses major computational facilities, including the HPC system 'Arka' and the supercomputer 'Pratyush', used for advanced weather and climate forecasting. Notable researchers associated with IITM include Sulochana Gadgil, Roxy Mathew Koll, Gufran-Ullah Beig, and Bhupendra Nath Goswami.
