National Institute of Technology, Srinagar

National Institute of Technology Srinagar (NIT Srinagar or NITSRI) is a public technical university in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Established in 1960 as the Regional Engineering College, Srinagar, under the Second Five-Year Plan, it moved to its present campus in 1965. It was upgraded to National Institute of Technology status in July 2003 and granted Deemed University status the same year. On 15 August 2007, it became an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act, 2007, placing it directly under the Ministry of Education. The institute admits undergraduates through the Joint Entrance Examination (Mains) and DASA for non-resident Indians, while postgraduate admissions use GATE, CCMT, and JAM scores. It has 12 academic departments, including eight engineering departments and four in Physical Sciences and Humanities, with English as the medium of instruction. The campus lies on the western bank of Dal Lake near Hazratbal Shrine, about 23 km from Srinagar International Airport. Facilities include a Central Library with 75,000 books, a Health Centre, Wi-Fi network, and multiple hostels for male and female students. Prof. Binod Kumar Kanuajia currently serves as director. NIT Srinagar was ranked 73rd by NIRF in 2025 and 32nd by India Today's rankings.
