IIIT Hyderabad was founded in 1998 under a public-private partnership Deemed University model by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Government of Telangana, and NASSCOM, with the state government providing land and buildings. Ajay Prakash Sawhney shaped the concept as special officer, while Rajeev Sangal designed the syllabus and served as first director until 2013. Originally named Indian Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad, it was renamed International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad in 2001 upon attaining deemed university status. It also served as the mentor institute for LNM Institute of Information Technology, Jaipur. The institute emphasizes research alongside coursework, with departments spanning computer science, electronics, computational linguistics, bioinformatics, cognitive science, and semiconductor technologies. It was ranked 38th among engineering colleges in NIRF 2025 and 74th among universities in India in NIRF 2024. Admissions to undergraduate programs occur via JEE (Main), UGEE, Olympiad representation, DASA, and lateral entry; postgraduate admissions use the PGEE. The institute celebrated its Silver Jubilee in September 2023.
