Khalsa College Amritsar

Khalsa College is a historic educational institution in Amritsar, Punjab, India, founded in 1892 to provide higher education to Sikhs and Punjabis during the British Raj. Its 300-acre campus, located about eight kilometers from the city center on the Amritsar-Lahore highway, adjoins Guru Nanak Dev University, to which it is academically affiliated. The Khalsa College Establishment Committee was formed in 1890, with support from Sikh Maharajas, princely states, and prominent Sikh families who donated land and funds. The main building, completed in 1911–12, was designed by architect Bhai Ram Singh in the Indo-Sarcenic style, blending British, Mughal, and Sikh architectural elements. The foundation stone was laid on 5 March 1892, with classes beginning in 1893. In 1930, a Sikh History Research Centre was established within the college, later growing into a library and art gallery housing thousands of artefacts, manuscripts, and books related to Sikh history. Today, Khalsa College comprises multiple faculties, including Humanities and Social Sciences, Commerce and Business Administration, Sciences, and Agriculture. It operates under the Khalsa College Charitable Society, which oversees numerous affiliated colleges and schools across Amritsar. Notable alumni include former Chief Ministers, Supreme Court judges, military officers, and prominent writers and artists.
