INDIAN DIAMOND INSTITUTE, SURAT
The Indian Diamond Institute (IDI) is a Government of India sponsored autonomous higher school of learning in the fields of diamonds, gems and jewellery, located in Surat, Gujarat, about 263 km from Mumbai. It was formed in 1978 by the Government of India as a project of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) to enhance learning facilities in diamond, gems and jewellery education. IDI is registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and also under the Bombay Public Trust Act of 1950. It functions from a two-storeyed building with classrooms, conference and seminar rooms, computer labs, design studios, a diamond and gem testing laboratory, auditorium, library, and other facilities. The Institute has an R&D centre registered with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), mandated to support technological upgrades in diamond processing. IDI has technical collaboration with the Gemmological Association (Gem A), London, and is recognized as a Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation and an Anchor Institute by the Government of Gujarat. It is ISO 9001:2008 certified and a member of several trade and industry organizations. In 2013, the Government of Botswana sought IDI's assistance in setting up a diamond institute there.
