ICAR-Directorate of Groundnut Research (ICAR-DGR), formerly known as the National Research Centre for Groundnut, is a premier national-level institute set up by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Ministry of Agriculture, India, to conduct research on groundnut (peanut) crops. Established on 1 October 1979 at Junagadh, Gujarat, by Founder Director Dr. Durga Prasad Misra, it was the first crop commodity research unit under the ICAR's National Research Centres category, functioning as an autonomous registered society. Initially located on leased land from Gujarat Agricultural University, the institute later moved to a larger 100-hectare site in 1991. In 2009, the National Research Centre on Groundnut was elevated to the level of a Directorate. The institute is mandated to conduct basic, strategic, and adaptive research to improve groundnut productivity and quality, disseminate technology, and build capacity. Its work is organized into five divisions: Crop Production, Crop Protection, Crop Improvement, Basic Sciences, and Social Sciences. It also hosts the All India Coordinated Research Project on Groundnut (AICRP-G), which coordinates research across five agro-climatic zones in collaboration with State Agricultural Universities, ICAR institutes, and Krishi Vigyan Kendras.
