Chennai Mathematical Institute, Chennai

Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) is a higher education and research institute located in Chennai, India, founded in 1989 by the SPIC Science Foundation as the School of Mathematics. It became an independent institution in 1996 under the name SPIC Mathematical Institute, and was renamed Chennai Mathematical Institute in 1998. CMI offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in physics, mathematics, and computer science, and is particularly noted for its research in algebraic geometry, especially moduli of bundles. Initially based in T. Nagar, Chennai, the institute moved to a new campus in Siruseri in October 2005. Until December 2006, when it was recognized as a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, its teaching programmes were affiliated with Bhoj Open University, and earlier its Ph.D. programme was affiliated with BITS Pilani and the University of Madras. The founding director was C. S. Seshadri, succeeded by Rajeeva L. Karandikar in 2010, and later by Madhavan Mukund in 2021. CMI receives funding from government bodies such as DAE, ISRO, DST, and DRDO, as well as private sources including SPIC, Sriram Group of Companies, Matrix Laboratories, and Infosys Foundation.
