Government Medical College, Srinagar (GMC Srinagar) is a government medical college and hospital situated in the Karan Nagar area of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India, about 1.5 km from Lal Chowk. Founded in 1957 with the foundation stone laid by Jawaharlal Nehru, it was established as Jammu and Kashmir Medical College in 1959, admitting its first batch that year. Initially located at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital, it moved to its present 100-acre Karan Nagar campus in 1962. The college was renamed Government Medical College Srinagar in 1970 and affiliated with the University of Kashmir the same year. Postgraduate admissions began in 1982, and the college gained Medical Council of India recognition for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in 1998. Admissions are based on merit through the National Eligibility and Entrance Test, with a combined undergraduate intake of 250 seats as of 2026. The campus includes academic blocks, laboratories, an auditorium seating around 500, and sports facilities. It has eight associated hospitals, including SMHS Hospital, G. B. Pant Children Hospital, and Lal Ded Maternity Hospital. Notable alumni include Akhtar Purvez, and Rafiq Ahmad Pampori served as a former principal.
