Government Medical College Kannur
Government Medical College Kannur, also known as Pariyaram Medical College, was established in March 1993 at Pariyaram in Kannur district, Kerala state, India. It holds the distinction of being the first medical college in India to be established under the cooperative sector, and it was originally known as the Academy of Medical Sciences (ACME). Today, the institution functions as a major medical center in the Malabar region of Kerala. It serves a wide geographic area, providing medical services and education to residents of Kannur district and Kasaragod district, as well as parts of Kozhikode district and Wayanad district. The establishment of the college was driven by the vision of Mr. M. V. Raghavan, who served as a Minister of Kerala. The college is located near the Parassinikkadavu Snake Park, a notable landmark in the region. Over time, the institution has grown into an important center for medical education and healthcare delivery in the Malabar area, reflecting its founding purpose of expanding access to medical training and treatment through a cooperative model that was novel for India at the time of its creation.
