Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science & Technology of Jammu, Jammu

Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is an agriculture university situated in the town of Chatha, in the Jammu district of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It was established on 20 September 1999 through an amendment to the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Act of 1982, separating it from the original SKUAST (J&K), which had been established in 1982. The split was prompted by the distinct agricultural, livestock, and cropping needs of the Jammu region compared to Kashmir, and was announced by then Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda in 1996, later reiterated by his successor I.K. Gujral. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research's Madan Committee recommended the creation of a separate university for Jammu. The university's main campus at Chatha houses the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Basic Sciences, Faculty of Dairy Technology, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Horticulture & Forestry, and the School of Biotechnology, while the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry is located at R.S. Pura, Jammu. The university also operates several Krishi Vigyan Kendras and research stations across the Jammu region. In 2024, NIRF ranked it 20th among agriculture institutes in India.
